Athleta First Wearing: Essence Tie Back Tank and Shibori Fully Focused Bra (Plus the Refine Tank)

My big order from last week arrived on Wednesday and I immediately tore the tags off a couple of items to wear for my weight lifting bootcamp class yesterday. Shown in the photo above is the Essence Tie Back Tank, Shibori Fully Focused Bra, and Tie Dye Salutation Capris.  I have an Essence Low Tank that I love - it's made of a light, soft, and very breathable polyester/lyocell/spandex fabric - that is great for sweaty workouts.

The Essence Tie back comes in the already-tied configuration. I haven't loved many tie backs since they pop open and reveal things I'd rather keep hidden, however, the material in this tank drapes nicely and is stretchy enough that you can pull it down and it stays in place well. The neckline is higher but has a nice scoop - it showed a little cleavage on me since I went with my larger size and I'm fairly busty. I really liked this tank - I found it very comfortable and cool for my workout, and I'm thinking about getting one or two more. The other women in my bootcamp group really liked it, as well.

Shown with the Athleta cups in it.

Discrete Athleta logo.

I tried the Shibori Fully Focused Bra in the store and liked it but left it at the store for a couple of reasons - one was that the cups in the stores were super wrinkly and ruined the look of the bra, and the other was that the internal mesh lining material had some pulls in it. I decided to order it to get a never-tried-on one with the hopes that both those issues would be solved.

This is the Athleta bra cookie my bra came with, as you can see it's pretty wrinkly. When on, you can't see the wrinkles because of the print but when I put on the Essence Tie Back Tank they showed up very clearly. I ended up putting in a pair of lululemon bra cups since they're made of stiffer material and it takes a bit of abuse to wrinkle them.

Comparison of the XL Athleta bra cookie compared to a 38D lululemon Ta Ta Tamer and a regular size 12/14 lululemon bra cookie. I didn't try putting the TTT cookie into the Fully Focused bra but from eye-balling it I don't think it would fit in the cup pocket, roomy as it is. The regular lululemon cookie fit fine and worked well during my workout.

I really liked the Fully Focused. It was decently supportive for a weight lifting workout, similar to an Energy Bra, and was very comfortable and breathable (I wore it for hours after my workout). It has a bit more coverage in the front than an Energy Bra but it still showed cleavage on me. The bra is super soft and the material was cool and wicking. My one comment is that the mesh lining snags easily. As you can see from the photos above, mine came in perfect condition but after pulling it out of the washer it has a couple of snags in it. I can't recall whether I put it in a mesh bag to wash but I suspect I did not.  Despite the vulnerability of the internal liner I would get another one (I'd probably haunt the sale section for it, though, unless it was a print I couldn't live without) since it was very comfortable.

The Refine tank was part of my large order from last week. It's super soft and airy. The XL is definitely on the roomy side for me and the armpits droop a bit. This top is currently on sale on the website. I don't think I'm keeping it since I don't think I'll be able to keep it clean and there are other tanks I've liked more.

Are you still enjoying the Tie Dye Salutation Capris? I am hoping they come back in stock as I love a high waist band.

@TexiLex - oh yeah! Love them to pieces. They need to hurry up and make more prints so I can get more.

Love the fully focused bra! I'm trying out two at the moment to see if they are a good replacement for my old energy bras.

You're getting me into trouble featuring two brands lol I'm really starting to love your Athleta posts as much as the Lululemon posts. Thank you.

Luv, luv. luv this! Very helpful and tempting. LLA, you surprise me with this navy blue theme...I remember how navy reminds you of work clothes. Who could resist this outfit, though? I must admit, I too have placed some big Athleta orders in the past 6 months, as a direct result of my disinterest in LLL offerings. Athleta's Chatturanga capris and high neck Chi tanks in particular have been my go to's. The Gap has been winning me over also, with their Breathe GapFit line. Or, sometimes it's just nice to mix it up so I'm not always wearing the same brand, head to toe. Thank you for this fun, refreshing post. Keep 'em coming!

I received and wore that exact outfit last week. Tons of compliments! Except for the bra. I have to wear looser easy on & off bras due to rotator cuff injuries. Hook backs are out too. I am not a runner so don't need the extra support. Also, got the Refine tank on MD. It's a bit boxy on me, so I tie it very loosely on the front/side. So soft! I am very short waisted so the length is perfect.

@anon 1:56 pm - the good thing about Athleta is that they have major product drops a lot less frequently than lululemon. The bad thing is that it tends to make me buy a lot more at one time.

@outofthebox - I know! I usually dislike navy workout clothes but I guess if you make it tie dye or a shibori print I am in. ;)

@ JFW - I have been thinking about ordering the pink Refine tank since it was so soft. Does it ride up on you? That is one comment I have read on the website reviews. We do burpees and down dogs, among other things, in bootcamp and I prefer not to flash my pasty belly to the gym.

Totally off topic but does anyone know if the ls swiftly In Tempo Stripe White Black ever hit Canada? It was in Australia etc....wondering if I missed it. TIA

I sooo wish Athleta would open a Canadian branch.....pretty please

I wish Lululemon would make fun prints like this!!! See even Athleta's designs look more motivating than LLM. Oh well...

OT... but would you say $200 for barkberry scuba (NWOT) is a good deal?

Thanks for the review I love the tie dye capris and like the navy tank too. I bought the capris in black and love them.

I just purchased the essence tie back today after reading your post. I too have shied away from tie backs due to exposing too much, but I really like this one.

As a side note, I purchased the high rise chaturangas in black as well. I had gone to Lululemon with the intention of purchasing black high rise wunder unders, but was disappointed to find how thin they were compared to older wunder unders I own. My dark underwear was very clearly displayed with a slight hip bend. The chaturangas were much thicker and flattering.

@toni - Barkberry washes me out but I know that Scuba is highly sought after. I wouldn't say $200 is a "good" price but I guess it's not bad, after looking at the ebay comps.

@ anon 3:44 pm - I'm glad you liked the Essence Tie back, too.

I really like the B/W striped Chaturangas I bought a couple of months ago. They fit really, really well. I wish they had all had a nylon blend fabric but it's only in some colors.

why, oh why don't we have Athleta in Canada?!?! I absolutely love all these items. LLA, please keep these reviews coming. I feel a twisted pleasure reading them knowing I cannot buy them, LOL!!!
I really wish Athleta would reconsider entering the Canadian market, sigh....

I still can't bite the Athleta bait. It still seems suburban to me. Need to stop in a store and really look at their gear.

@M - perhaps, but what adjective(s) would you use to describe lululemon's designs these days? I'd call it student-tier work by people lacking an artistic eye.
