Giant Herringbone Speed Tight IIs on the left vs the new Power Luxtreme Variegated Knit Speed Tight Vs on the right. (I did a comparison of the Speed Tight IVs to the same Herringbone Speed Tight IIs last year (for reference, the photos at the end of this post)). The differences between the Speed Tight IIs and the V are: the Vs are 1.5" shorter (28.5" vs. 30"), logo moved to the waistband, and seam across the back of the thigh. The only difference I can tell between the Speed Tight IV and V is the lack of ruching at the bottom.

The Variegated Knit looks like a tiny herringbone. It's nicely thick, too - thicker than the herringbone. I weighed both pairs of pants and the Variegated Knit ones were a little heavier (.62 lb vs. .60 lb) than the Herringbone, despite being 1.5" shorter.

If you are a fan of textured luxtremes and missed out on the herringbone Speed Tights the Variegated Knit are a nice alternative.

Thanks for the comparison! It's kinda sad to see though because the ruching and length are the two reason why I don't like the new speeds as much! I wish they could make a tall and regular so us tall folks could use them for winter running.

This is off topic but I tried the Featherlight Tights on in store in the feathery pattern and they felt amazing- later I decided to go ahead and splurge and ordered the black pair online, because I anticipated wearing them a lot so a solid, neutral color made more sense, right? Wrong! The black pair felt totally different-- turns out the feather print ones are Nulux and both the gray and the black are Luxtreme. I re-read the product info on the website which incorrectly states that they're all luxtreme. Is it just me or is that super confusing? The 'featherlight' product name only really applies to the naked sensation/feather print, so why make two more colors out of a different fabric and group them in under the same name? So annoyed that I'm returning and I'm not even going to buy the printed pair, no matter how comfortable they felt!

Thank you! I'm definitely getting these! (I'm the one that tweeted at you haha)

I like the ruching! Must be another time saving (during manufacturing) and cost cutting measure getting rid of it because I know a lot of other people also really liked the ruching. Shortening the inseam also most likely a cost cutting measure... each pair that is even only slightly shorter adds up over millions of pairs of pants into fabric and money saved. I really dislike the added seam across the back of the thigh area - looks terrible and I don't think anyone is looking for any unnecessary seams added to their run/workout pants. Also, I know the ones in the photos above don't have mesh, but really, really hate that they've ruined so many bottoms (including the Speeds) with all this mesh - it's ugly, and honestly I don't find it functional at all. Another cost cutting measure.

these new short pants are my freaking pet peeve. it seems everything is a 7/8 pant and the ones that are supposedly full length have seemed to be getting shorter- and now I know it's not my imagination. I'm sure for the majority of girls it's not a big deal but the main reason I was drawn to lulu in the first place is because I'm 6ft tall and I have a really hard time finding leggings that are long enough. You don't think of it being a huge deal, sure they look a little dorky but you can deal with that- until it's 0 degrees and snowing and you just don't want to have frostbite on your ankles on the way to yoga class.

they almost look like crops next to the older version!! it infuriates me that they are making them so short! greediness at its finest.

Great comparison LLA! Thanks. I'm not loving the extra seam on back thigh. I just bought 3 pairs of brushed Speed V's. I must say I did notice the seam, where I had not on my other Speeds from the years. Now I see why...the seam did not exist.

I don't love extra seams. I feel them, they pull by nature, they cause more production issues (seams that don't align).

LLA, are those the same size? The difference in length is obvious, but it also kind of looks like the thigh is wider on the new ones. Someone was complaining that they're not that compressive; maybe they're just larger.

@ anon 8:06 am - the seam across the back of the thigh came when they added mesh panels to the tights. I wish they'd get rid of them. To me, Speed Tights are my colder weather tights so no mesh needed.

@ anon 7:26 am - good. I was wondering whether to tweet back at you with a link for these photos.

@Catepillar - It seems like they've definitely turned their backs on taller women.

@ anon 8:45 am - I didn't align the pants very well in my photo so the difference looks worse than it is but it's definitely a 1.5" difference.

Thank you for posting. I was waiting for this comparison. I love my Giant Herringbone Speed II and will buy these as well. I am 5 ft 6 in and these will be a bit short on me too.

I actually dislike the ruching just because it looks less streamlined to me, but the variegated Speeds are much, much better quality that my most recent release of the herringbone Speeds (IVs). I have one pair with ruching at the bottom (IVs) and one without (IIs), and the IVs definitely thinner and scratchier than these. I'm really, really happy with them (aside from the thigh seam). I hope they stop ruining all the Speed tights with mesh because these have always been one of my staples. Plus, POWER LUXTREME. I feel like it's been forever since they've put out PL bottoms.

@ anon 10:10 am - they're the same size. I think it's an optical illusion that the thigh looks wider. I added another photo with the Variegated Knit on top of the Herringbone Speed Tights. I pulled the herringbone out of the laundry basket so the legs are probably a little more relaxed than they'd be after a wash but the sizing is close.

An eminent example (thank you, LLA, for the comparison) of how this company is cutting corners. Even if the difference in length is only 1.5" or so, for someone taller it might mean freezing ankles in the winter, even though the fabric was made for cold weather. With the shorter length, it is more probable that women of average height will not need the hemming service -an other potential saving right there! The seams on the back of the tights are totally incongruous. If there's no mesh that necessitates these seams, why not design tights without them? That said, I do like the material for the winter, and since m only 5.5, these tights will probably fit me in length too.

wow, the difference in length is just insane!

I got them today but I haven't popped the tags yet. I wish I would have gotten the old herringbone ones. :(

You had posted the new space Ivivva print and on a whim I ordered the pants and tank to see if they would fit. I'm really impressed with the quality and thickness of the fabrics. The tank and pants are both reversible and since they are backed in black the prints don't fade. They are still sending bags with their orders. I will definitely be ordering more from Ivivva. I also got a crib type of tank from clearance for only $19 that is reversible and not thin at all.

@ anon 2:23, I agree with you. I think Inposted previously about the moon gem purchases, ( sweater, and galactic wanderer pants) I also picked up with moon wrap sweater in hero blue. The quality of all of these is old lulu so you really notice the difference this year!! Plus the prices are a lot less...

What size should you order in ivviva if you are a 4 in LL?
