"Waldo" Speed Shorts - among the most sought after in the re-sale market. |
I'm reading multiple reports that Speed Shorts are to be gone by fall. Store educators had a mandatory education and video with yesterday's product drop. This is as many of us suspected.
I assume the new Speed Up Tights and Crops are replacing their counterparts, too.
The fit is a bit different on the new shorts - I am reading they are snugger in the thigh but have less flare and diaper-butt but more pockets. This will be a major blow to the lululemon fan-base. If people liked the Cool Racerback they loved Speed Shorts, and I have read of more than a few collections reaching the hundred-mark.

Wow. Lulu just doesn't like their customers much.
They look like knockoffs. How much more can lululemon do to alienate their loyal fanbase? Sheer swiftlies, now this? Bye, lulu.
No, no, no! I will hoard ALL the speeds!
Not surprising. They seem hell bent on alienating their longtime customer base. I haven't tried the Speed Up shorts yet, but the try on reviews I've read don't leave me feeling optimistic. I'm going to go cry into my pile of 60+ speed shorts now.
@ anon 6:47 pm- I know. I'm sure they are working on replacing the remaining items that I buy - Energy Bras, Free to Be Serenes, Swiftlys, and probably Wunder Unders.
@ anon 6:08 pm - I think it's more the new guys want to put THEIR stamp on the brand.
nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!
I have about 40 to 50 pairs of Speed Shorts so I'm ok. Same with CRB's.
Change is good. It's hard. Hopefully, something new will come along that I love. I have tons of Speed Tights and Pace Rival Crops too, so I'm prepared to survive the wait for something new and great.
Honestly, I felt the Speed Shorts have been very weak the past 18 months. I haven't bought a pair in a while.
Why? WHY WOULD THEY DO THIS? Ugh. I guess I'll be boarding the SW speeds since that's probably the last of them :( I had a feeling this would happen since they've hardly released any speeds lately (at least far fewer than they were a couple years ago).
They can put THEIR stamp on them by coming out with something other than black, white or gray. I'm so sad. I love and live in my speeds shorts for long distance running. I can't believe they are doing this.
This is awful. I don't own many Speed Shorts as others do, but why take away what is well-loved by the people who have backed Lulu the longest? I feel like when Lululemon loses a drastic amount of customers and thus income, only then will they realize that they should stop tampering with what has worked for them for a long time.
The only upside to this is that now, some of those nice colours and patterns in the Speed Shorts will finally hit the WMTM section. But that's hardly a positive.
I hope other core items don't start disappearing too. I'll scream if they touch the Define Jackets.
Ahh another of my core staples that bites the dust. Speed are the only short I wear of course. Glad for the heads up, funny that out of my new store purchases this year, speeds were the majority. Well that's not surprising as the bulk of my lululemon purchases this year have been from ebay. Am really not a fan of the "new Lulu"
Omg. This is crazy. Just crazy.
Ugh, don't forget about the pace rival skirts! I hate all the current skirts.
I HATE speed shorts. I always thought they were WAY TOO SHORT and only girls with tooth pick thighs can wear them. I say good riddance.
Speed Shorts and their earlier iterations is what got me into LLL. It does not make sense to discontinue a staple but such is the path of LLL these days so it is not a surprise at all. I used to have a lot more Speed Shorts than I do but purged a couple years ago. I'm a hard core runner down to about 7 pairs, which get rotated. With this news of their being discontinued, I am basically of a "whatever" attitude (no drama). I don't really need any more, I'm not going to hoard; while I've culled my clothes, I still have too much. There will always be something new and cool/cute to love. The desire to acquire, when and if to acquire, and to ensure one purges, I look at very deeply now. I have more that has to go and I've started to consider eBay (I used to sell just locally). Now I'll have to re-read your eBay posts and advice, LLA. Thanks for those as a resource and for all your hard work!
I'm not a fan of the Speed Shorts (a little too short for me), but i know they are a major staple item. I don't get why they keep retiring and/or changing staple items that have huge followings. I'm still mad about the original CRB, Pace Setter Skirt, and Groovy Run Shorts. I'm guessing the Pace Rivals and Run Times will also be retired. Ugh.
Yes let's not forget they also added the free to be wild bra as a core item and discontinued it, they also discontinued the wild tank, 105 singlet with scalloped edges, inspire crops, list goes on and o ☹️
Well I'm glad to have the heads up so I can grab some more before they go away. Speeds Shorts are what I live in! In addition to wearing them for running, I always change into a pair when I get home from work or wear them all the time in the weekends too. I was upset about the CRB but this really annoys me!!! :(
They should have retired them Ever since they messed with the original fit of the speed short, What they've been calling speed shorts the last couple of years is laughable. Longer and flappy back and diaper butt is NOT flattering! Every speed short I've tried this year and last I have returned. They should retire their current designers too and bring back the ones that made lulu so great long ago!
I like the fit of the new speed up shorts. They fix a lot of the problems I've heard women complaining about over the years.
Maybe this is a ploy like the Coke Zero replaced Diet Coke...only to bring back Diet Coke later.
@emily - I'm hoarding my Groovy Run shorts. They're my favorite of all the shorts styles.
@7:13, the Speed Up Shorts are more similar to the older version of Speeds. The back seam (air vents) doesn't pucker anymore because the fabric is connected with mesh. The waist band is thinner and a little looser. Also, the hem on the liner is thinner and smoother. So, some of you guys might welcome the change because it's going back to the older version of the Speeds. In a way, LLL listened to the complaints about the newer version of Speeds.
I too hate it when they discontinue things I love but such is life. It happens with every retail item. But there's always something new to love. May not be LLL but you'll find something else.
Everyone CALM down! If you've been a fan of speed shorts from the beginning, then you will not be disappointed. The diaper-butt and flare IS GONE and they fit like they did before they changed the fit. I get that they changed the CRB and no one is happy, but IMO this is a positive change. Everyone (that I know who loves the older speeds) has been complaining about the diaper butt/flare and they finally listened.
LLA, you are correct in assuming the Speed up tights are replacing the speed tights (same girl who told me that speed up shorts are replacing speeds).
Considering they've yet to actually improve on an item they discontinued, I think this is just another death knell for this brand.
I love Speed shorts. That's all I wear to the gym , out and about all summer long. I have about 20 pairs. I just bought a pair of Speed Up ones to try. Heard that they are more fitted around your legs. Will see. I'm being positive, change is always hard, but it's ok
I had only purchased two pairs of Groovy Run Shorts before they discontinued them and I wear them sparingly in order to keep them as long as possible. My absolute all time favourite short is the Run: Full Tilt that have a 5" inseam, have a ruched panel strip down both sides and cute puckered reflective fabric. They have the same waistband as the Tracker short and are very comfortable. These would not have been cheap to make due to the detail so the fact that they discontinued them was no surprise. Under this management all cute detail and unique design has been canned in order to make more cheaply produced product. What hasn't been canned has been "tweaked" and in most cases, not for the best. Even the classic DSP and Street To Studios fit have been altered slightly but just enough that I no longer like the fit and don't buy them anymore.
Why are they doing this to us? I feel they are doing everything they can to alienate us. I miss the All Sport and Stuff Your Bras for running. I hardly bit admitting anymore. The bras done fit as well either, news styles that is. I'm angry and disappointed. Right now of I'm buying Lululemon I'm old styles on ebay.
AGREE!
I understand that a lot of Lulu fans are disappointed about yet another core item disappearing, but reading some of the later comments, it sounds like the new Speed Up shorts are actually a good upgrade. So I'll stay optimistic about them. Like an earlier anon said, I just hope they don't take Define Jackets away.
On the other hand, you know what I think Lulu should try doing? A "Throwback Sale", as in bring back some of the old styles, colours, and patterns just for a month or so for people to buy. I know a lot of new-found Lulu shoppers (and long time addicts) who would die if they could get their hands on retired styles like the Pace Setter Skirts, Inspired Crops, Scuba Hoodie II (I'm in the process of trying to get that Cranberry Ghost Dot one), Groove Pants, Groove Shorts, No Limit/Free To Be Wild Tanks, etc. Lulu would make tons of money, and a lot of us fans would be very happy!
I just tried on the speed up shorts at my local lulu: HATE!
I am 5'4 & weigh about 125 pounds, my measurements are 32-25-36, which puts me between a size 4 & 6 for lulu bottoms. I wear a size 4 in all bottoms (trackers, run times, groovy run shorts, WU's, etc...) except for speeds which I always take a 6 (including the mesh ones from last year that many said to size up on, I did not need to).
I like my speeds to fit on the looser side (like the models on the lulu website) and I have been buying speeds pretty regularly since 2013. I do agree that most (not all) of my speed purchases from the last couple of years, the speeds have been running a tiny bit to quite a bit larger. But what bothered me most of all, was the inconsistency in sizing between models (like dottie tribe had just a slightly large fit, but palm lace tofino teal had much more of a larger fit).
I have a butt and athletic (larger) thighs, so I did not mind the larger fit of the recent speeds. I have enough curves to avoid the "diaper butt" look. No puckering of material either.
The speed up shorts run smaller FOR SURE.
I was not bothered too much by the length, the fit on the waist or even the smaller leg openings (although I do prefer the looser fit of my speeds for sure). It was the fact that there was less material "in the back". The speed ups are much snugger on the behind. And, to be blunt: my ass was practically hanging out. There is NO way that I would wear these shorts to run in. I'm 90% sure that I would be flashing some cheek!
I tried on a pair of "regular" black speeds to compare. Not a *huge* difference from the front. But from behind: YIKES! If you have a "curvier" (larger) frame like myself, and enjoyed the extra butt coverage offered by the newer speeds, the speed ups may not be for you.
I think new Speed Up shorts will mostly work for people with no butt or very small butt. Those are usually runners. If you lift and have butt than they'll be too tight on the back. I personally never had a problem with Speeds before and it looks like Speed Ups won't work for me ( not enough fabric on the back and too narrow tigh opennings) based on comments.
I can't wear the run times because I have bigger thighs so the speed shorts and hotty hots are my go to! I can't imagine a tighter leg on the Speed Ups. I wish they would at least keep the normal speeds as an option. With that being said, I am interested in the 4 inch length of the Speed Ups because at 5'7" I usually size up in the Speeds for length.
I absolutely love my Speeds, so this is a huge disappointment. This is the last core favorite of mine that they still made (although as many have said, they've messed up the sizing and fit recently). For those who are moving toward other brands, what do you buy? I have yet to find a good replacement for the Speed short, even if I can find plenty of cute crops and tanks elsewhere. RIP LLL :(
