OT: Athleta Purchases - Salutation Capris, Finish Fast LS, CYA Crossback Sweatshirt, Colorblock Sonar Crops, Sweat Life Tank, and Breezy Tank

Since lululemon has been awful lately I've been shopping at Athleta this month to get my workout clothes fix. These were yesterday's purchases - Navy Heatherd Coloblock Sonar Capris ($74),  Purple Paradise Finish Fast LS ($64) , and Blue Tint Breeze Tank ($44). The Finish Fast LS is what sucked me into these pieces. A commenter on the blog, I think, wrote that she had been buying Athleta's version of the swiftly because they were cheaper and snagged less so I wanted to give one a try. Athleta finally came out with some nice solid colored versions of them (they've done a lot of heathereds and stripes in the past) so I caved. The Purple Paradise was impossible to resist.

I swear these tops used to be made of polyester but Athleta has a lot more nylon/spandex materials lately. They've also softened up a lot of their fabrics which used to be my other problem with the brand - more often than not I found a lot of things on the scratchy side.

Reflectivity on the sleeve.

Front and back reflectivity.

Thumbholes on the sleeves.

Side zipper pocket!
The top also has a lot of nice technical features - reflectivity on both arms, the back, and the front; long sleeves with thumbholes; a zipper pocket (yes!) for a car key; and grip strips at the hem to help keep the top in place.  The tags claim the material is unstinkable and treated with silver salts to prevent odor. I haven't worn it yet so can't comment but I will come back to update whether the claim is true. The sizing is TTS.

Update - some comparisons to Swiftlys. The Finish Fast runs small.
XL Athleta Finish Fast  to a Size 10 lululemon Swiftly. Very similar in size.

XL Athleta Finish Fast to a lululemon size 12 Swiftly.

Take in outside light.

Take indoors and more true to life.
I have two other pairs of Sonar Crops and really like them.  They are a polyester blend (review here) but the material is very soft, like luxtreme. It's on the thicker side, though, and gives good coverage. I do find it hotter than luxtreme but my bootcamp is outside so it's livable. I also feel like I don't have to baby these as much as I do a pair of luluelmon bottoms. I was looking for a pair of bottoms to pair with the Purple Paradise top and I really liked that the navy part was a space dye instead of solid. The sizing on these is generous so you might want to size down from your lululemon size.

I also wanted a tank to wear with the new crops so I got the Breeze Tank ($44). This is a modal blend tank. If you want the tank to look like it does on the model, size down from the size you map into since this runs large.

I got the Sweat Life tank a couple of weeks ago. The material is seamless and very soft. The neck comes up very high so make a nice choice if you are an instructor. I've worn it a couple of times and really like it. It's long and stayed in place decently for a workout on the elliptical and weight machines. It rode up on me when I wore it with luxtreme crops when walking. I plan to wear it with my luon bottoms from now on. I thought the pink fit the loosest of all the colors. A lot of the reviews say to size up in this since it fits on the snug side and will highlight muffin top.

I also bought the new Salutation Capris ($69) made of Athleta's new Powervita material. This is Athleta's dupe of nulu. I have to say I really, really like these crops. I've read a comment from the Facebook groups that a woman felt her Powervita bottoms and the Aligns with her eyes closed and couldn't tell the difference. I think the material feels a little thicker and more compressive than nulu.  The waistband is high and the seaming is very flattering. I've tried to lighten my photos to show it. I immediately took the tags off the day I bought them and wore them around. I've worn them for a couple of work outs and there are no signs of pilling. I haven't worn them lately because it's been so chilly out but I anticipate getting a lot of wear out of these. Sizing is generous compared to lululemon.

The last piece I bought earlier this month is the CYA Crossback Sweatshirt, made of modal. It's super, super soft and even though it's $89 I couldn't resist it. I've worn it a few times and really like it. Sizing is generous.

Love your choices! I love the cross back sweatshirt and Powervita is so nice. I've spent $0 lulu dollars in the past year, and many, many $$s at Athleta. The quality is great, the return policy is stellar, and the staff are always so helpful AND knowledgeable. I also love what they stand for -- female empowerment and sustainability. The catalogs are inspirational and I love how they show various body types and sizes without calling attention to it.

My lulu love is over.

Wow thanks for the great review!! I'm definitely gonna try the powervitAs!! Athleta has a lot of pros to me.

Thank you for leaving this review LLA. I recently have bought a number of pants from athleta and equally love them. The chat tights are comfortable for strength workouts (comparable to luon in my opinion) and I bought a pair of the powervita tights and they are so comfortable.

I felt the powervita fabric in store and it definitely feels like a thicker, more compressive nulu. It also reminded me of a thick, compressive rulu. I was in the Athleta store looking for more "superluxe" items -- superluxe feels very close to rulu. Unfortunately, they didn't make much with that superluxe fabric, but the SA suggested the salutation crops (powervita) and those felt REALLY nice. Just wish they used that fabric for some loose long sleeve tops...

I've been buying Athleta lately too! Just casual pieces so far but will check out more as there is absolutely nothing on my lulu list right now. Also sending Athleta gift cards instead of lulu... which seems to be just tired wired junk with a side of mesh lately...

I am falling back in love with Athleta. I think that their designers have stepped it up again. The Breeze Tank is just the type of workout tank cut that I'm looking for. I can go between a small or a medium in tops from Athleta. Any thoughts on which size I should go with?

LuluAddict said...

@Karin - definitely go for the small. I think their tops run big for the most part.

I've bought a lot of Athleta bottoms lately. My fave is the high rise Chats (specifically the striped ones)

I just got the Finish Fast in white and the Salutaion 7/8 pant today. I sized up in the top to a M (usually wear a 6 in swiftlies) and took xxs in the pants (usually a 4 in bottoms) with the helpful suggestions from the staff.

Definitely please let us know your thoughts on wearing the Finish Fast LS. It looks very clingy on the model and you can see all her (few) bumps - I finally got rid of some my older Athleta tops for that reason. Although they fit, they showed every lump and bump. I also don't like that wrinkly look around her hips - it looks like the fit is too tight around her hips for that size. Did you find that to be the case also, or is it just the photo of her?

Oh how I wish Athleta was in Canada because the Breeze Tank is definitely something I would buy as I don't buy LLL tanks anymore. I love all your pieces.

Thanks LLA! I went for the small in the purple/pink color to try. I love that it has a high neck and isn't tight or flowy!!

@ a non 5:18 am - I wore the Finish Fast LS yesterday. My initial thoughts are: it's a bit short compared to a Swiftly, it definitely is clingy - I think it fits snugger through the waist than the swiftly, the material is thicker than most swiftlys (new Indian Ocean is an exception since it's very thick), and the fit is snug around the hips. It definitely runs small so I'd size up from the athleta top size you normally buy.

@ anon 5:18 am - I just laid out the Finish Fast LS on top of my Swiftlys and the XL maps more into a lulu 10 than the 12. I'll put up some photos in a few minutes.

Thanks, LLA (I'm anon 5:18 AM). That's really helpful.

@ anon 10:08 am - You're welcome. I'm kind of shocked how small it runs, actually. lol. I knew it seemed smaller when I was wearing it but not a lulu size down.

I love Athleta, and I'm so glad to see you post about them! In the last 12 months, I've maybe bought 2 things from Lulu, and a ton from Athleta and some Nike. (And Bandier, lol)
Athleta's making some really awesome technical pieces AND great streetwear. I think they're really created a winning strategy by making some of their line/half the store for street, the other half for sport. It's super clear. I think Lululemon sometimes gets confused about who they are.... athleisure? Kind of works for running and also kind of for street? They've diluted a lot of their line to try to please everyone... and almost no one is happy. (In my opinion)

Plus- Athleta's customer service is top-notch, and as someone else mentioned, they really seem to care about the environment (recycled fabrics with eco-friendly processes), and empowering women/girls.

I would love to see more posts here on Athleta, and it sounds like others would too!

I'm new to athleta, and in the past month I've gotten two crops. I got the chaturanga crops in black and white stripe (similar to parallel stripe). They're definitely very flattering, but I experienced some slippage in the waist with a high impact workout. Im a size 4 Lulu and took xs in athleta. I also purchased the powervita petal salutation 7/8 crops in navy. The color blocking is incredibly flattering and leg lengthening! I highly recommend

@ anon 6:42 pm - I really like the seaming on the salutation crops. I thinks it's very flattering. I find the waists a bit loose on athleta bottoms. I haven't tried chatturanga crops in awhile but need to make a point to try them again. I think they're making the bottoms out of a nylon blend these days. I did try on the space dye criss cross ones a couple of weeks ago and really liked them.

@ anon 3:22 pm - The athleta staff has been very attentive every time I've gone in there and I use their reserve in store feature a lot before I head down to the store. Lululemon's latest designs have really lost me, they're just too plain and/or boxy, and there is only so much black, gray, and navy I can buy. I don't care for either nulu or nulux and the high prices with a quick markdown is a big turnoff. I only like Pace Rivals, WUCs, Speed Tights, and Energy Bras but there hasn't been many cute colors/prints lately. I'm going to end the month buying only one lululemon item -featherlight tights off WMTM (which I need to bring in because the mesh pocket at the waistband unraveled after two wears!) - and 7 athleta items - unprecedented for me.

I had to do a return today so I got another breezy tank, the ripple print one. They are such cute and comfy tanks. I can't wait until the weather warms up so I can wear it.

Thank you for sharing! I'm also new to athleta and just ordered the petal salutation tights online- I was worried I'd get the sizing wrong, but I'm also a 4 in Lulu and ordered an xs. Now I'm excited to get them!

Thanks for the review luluaddict- I don't have the money to spend at Lulu if it's not a top notch product. I'm hoping athleta works out for me.

Another vote for Athleta. I went to pick up the Sonar crops you featured in the blog- super cute. (thanks for sharing!) I was chatting up the salesgirl, and I happened to mention that I was buying most of my workout gear at Athleta now instead of Lululemon, and she said, "I am hearing that a lot these days!" Then she asked me why I thought that was, and I said it was easy- Lulu keeps making more of the same- all drab colors, less function, higher prices. Athleta is doing the opposite- fresh looks, bright colors, focus on technical, relatively affordable.
I swear, I think maybe someone high up at Lulu owns stock at Athleta and is quietly handing Athleta all their customers and market share. :P
I don't know how else to explain the trainwreck that LLL has become!

This is great to know, anyone have any issues with sales associates at athleta? My local store they don't seem to know the product and it's pulling teeth to get anyone to help you, most of the time they just ignore you. I know lulu can be a little over the top, but this is way in the wrong direction. It's what has kept me from really diving in at athleta

LuluAddict said...

@Jessica - mine used to be like that when it first opened a couple of years ago - I'd have like 30 things over my arm before anyone would approach me but now they're a lot more attentive. They're really good with getting me additional sizes and colors of items I am trying on now, too. The only issue I have found is the on line inventory can be misleading if you are trying to find an item in real time when you're in the store. I've often bought the only XL whatever item in the store - they seem to be like lululemon in that respect and stock one XL in tops - and it often takes a good 24 hours for it to update on line.

@LuluAddict
because of you, I've bought the Powervita leggings from Athleta (navy and white). love them! Aligns are the only thing from LLL I haven't tried and really wanted a pair, but when you mentioned Powervita might be more durable, I went with that instead and love it! So soft and comfortable. I does show sweat though :(
Would still like to try Aligns, but I'm just so worried about durability based on all the pilling reviews :|

LLM, is there any full-length tights from Athleta that's made of a fabric comparable to Luon? I want a pair that I can wear for workout and also double as a going-out legging. I don't live in the US so there isn't any stores I can try them on. Also, how does the sizing go? I'm usually a size 4 in lulu, 5'4" 110lbs.
