Women's Running magazine is getting some
major media attention for putting one of my fellow '
Athena'-sized runners on the cover. I love that she is wearing lululemon, too -
a Straight Up Tank and
Pace Pusher Crops. The magazine was doing an article on how popular athletic brands are expanding to make running clothes in larger sizes and decided to put her on the cover. Totally awesome.
Update - a great, great comment:
Update #2 - On a related note, a friend sent me this article about
the body positive movement in yoga. Love it.

This is so super awesome! But -I thought Lululemon gets a lot of flack for not making sizes beyond 12? Does this mean they're going to expand to 14, 16, etc?
I haven't read the article yet but I really doubt they are expanding. From what I can tell, that magazine likes to style a lot of lululemon on their models and they probably happened to choose lululemon. However, we can hope they might expand at least back up to 14, like they used to carry 5 years ago. I hope the positive media attention this gets encourages lululemon to at least offer size 12 in ALL their running gear. So many new run items have stopped at ten this year that' it's disappointing.
Yeah, I get that lululemon makes most on the mid-sizes, but as a size 2, I really appreciate when they do the special sizes. And I hope they expand back up to 14. I teach yoga and can 100% attest to the fact that fitness comes in all shapes and sizes. I wonder how business Athleta steals by making those sizes? I also have girls in my classes who wear the teen sizes from yogasmoga.
This is pretty cool to see.
this made my day because didn't chip say something about how only skinny women should be wearing lululemon? in your face chip!
@Hannah - yeah my SIL likes Yogasmoga for their teen sizes. I passed along all the YS stuff they sent me to my SIL and she really likes it. I also handed off some of my older size 14 lulu to her and they really like it. They'd love to buy more lululemon if it came in 14/16. I don't know why lulu can't at least carry expanded sizes on the website. I know 2s have been getting gypped on styles a lot lately.
@ anon 10:38 am - I know. However, when it was just Chip running the ship lululemon came in size 14. It was Christine Day who got rid of the 14s so in your face, too, Day! :P
She's gorgeous and looks stunning in her Lululemon outfit.
I'm a lulu addict strong and true, but I am a little disappointed that they didn't showcase a brand that is more "size aware" on the cover.
I am a 12 and a runner. I have often felt disappointed, discouraged and a little embarrassed when a lulu item I love doesn't come in my size.
I love my lulu, but we need to give more praise to those brands who are accommodating and loving active women of every size.
@ anon 11:15 am - I am 150% with you on the feelings when an item doesn't come in a 12. I am really hoping the positive media attention towards putting a larger runner on the cover of a run magazine, particularly wearing their apparel, will help lululemon see there is a market for the larger sizes in their run items. At one time they used to make items in a size 14. I think the new CEO is more about making money than exclusivity so hopefully they'll crunch some numbers about potential markets and see there is profit to be made. A ton of Disney race runners are plus sized. They are missing out on a lucrative market.
However, my friend pointed out it seems like lululemon is contracting their sizing regarding 2s and 12s under Potdevin. One can always hope - and in the meantime buy Athleta. :P
I think Lulu is way behind in acknowledging and supporting athletes of all sizes which is extremely unfortunate. I still get angry when I think about the 1st Seawheeze (my 1st half marathon). When I got to the race store and was told there were no 12s produced in the Seawheeze gear. Apparently Lulu didn't see fit to offer race gear to size 12 women - great motivation the day before this size 12 was going to run in Lulu's half marathon. Athletes come in all shapes and sizes and while it may not be business savvy to offer everything in a variety of sizes there could definitely be a bit more effort to acknowledge the masses and offer some things in a more substantial size run.
@ anon 12:46 pm - OMG totally forgot about the first Sea Wheeze expo store. That was my first half, too. Yes, that was a big F. U. to size 12 runners, particularly since the store offered many size 12 (and used to be 14!) run items. The thing that is most frustrating is that it seems very random as to what is offered or not offered in a 12. At first you think, oh I guess they think that print won't look good on a size 12 behind but then the same print gets offered in a different style. It's also annoying when 12s show up in Canada or Australia but not the US. I had to have Canadian friends send me things four times this year, which has never happened before.
This is awesome. You can't put a size on strength.
The comment about feeling embarrassed when an item doesn't come in her size is HEARTBREAKING. Totally heartbreaking. No one should ever feel that way about their incredible, amazing, bodies! Lululemon making people feel that way is bad business and BAD KARMA!
I am liking that photograph a lot. All the women I race sailboats with are 14 or 16, and very athletic. They are always telling me how they love my lulu gear ( I am a 4 or 6 in lulu), but lulu never carries their sizes. It's quite a bummer. women come in all sizes and shapes as shown above.

All Lululemon has to do is monitor which sizes sell out first, consistently. Size 12. I never get a crack at WMTM items, because they are sold out before they get to markdown. Unless the item is a total flop across the board, and then there is a full size run marked down in "loot". I would just be satisfied to have more than 15 minutes on upload day to have a chance to purchase popular styles in size 12 at full price before they sell out...
Thanks for this post, I am training for my first SeaWheeze this summer, and I have found other runners of all sizes so encouraging and supportive that I am attempting this at 40+, that being a "plus size" runner on August 15th won't be holding me back or making me feel like I don't belong :)
