Sea Wheeze Registration Pushed Off 10 Days

Damnit! The registration for Sea Wheeze has been pushed off until February 3rd. Emails were sent out that there will be a new "process" in place to register. I hope that doesn't mean lottery and crossing my fingers for something for legacy runners or that somehow those of us who got stuck in checkout can pick up where we left off. Info also said over 80% of the slots remain.

Anyone have any insights? Was it an DDoS attack or just overwhelmed [low] tech? I just can't imagine the race got that popular that fast. Particularly in a metro region that is only about 2.3 million big. Disneyland has been selling out their races in 24 hours the past year or so but Southern California has 22 million people and, in addition, Disney draws a large travel contingent. If the answer is overwhelmed tech, I hope the new CEO, Laurent Potdevin, who has a masters in engineering and hopefully an appreciation for tech, will make upgrading the IT systems at the company a priority. Lululemon has definitely been leaving money on the table with the issues that have been consistently plaguing e-commerce uploads since before Christmas.

I would assume they bit the bullet and are going to transfer registration over to another company to take care of. I seriously doubt it will go lottery style as they keep saying they are giving everyone a fair chance to register, and some people were already able to do that.

What likely happed from what I heard is that they were overwhelmed with the amount of hits the website received and it crashed. Now the issue with this is, every time someone hit refresh it pinged the website again meaning two hits from one person. Open up a second window and try your luck?? Well that adds another hit as well. The people who were trying on multiple computers had three or four hits all at once from one person, so while it may have seemed like 10,000 people were trying to register at once, it was likely half of that number if you figure most people were averaging two hits per person at once. Remember just because you hit refresh it doesn't mean your original query has stopped trying to contact the host site. It takes a bit for it to stop.

Nothing to do with SeaWheeze, but the phantom product I keep seeing in WMTM is really annoying. I've lost count of how many times over the last couple of weeks I've gone to look, on the off chance they've added something new outside the usual schedule, and seen something that I got excited about but when you click you get that irritating 'we're working on our flexibility' error message. Has it always been like this? It seems worse lately.

They really need better IT.

How did you get the email alert?

LuluAddict said...

@ anon 1:12 pm - I either got it because I have already run Sea Wheeze and am in their system - they sent out advance emails to reminds us of registration - or, because I made it as far into yesterday's registration as creating an account.

Anonymous said...

I made it through to the checkout - and got stuck. Spent nearly 3 hours fighting this yesterday and was so frustrated :(

FYI: I didn't get the email so I am guessing it went to previous participants?

I made it to "check out" before it crashed for good and never received an email.
@1:01 I hear your frustration with WMTM lately it's been ones and twos of random items. I scored a Ride Inside pullover and just received, usually all online products have no price on the hang tag but mine not only had a retail price it also had the purple sale sticker....very odd. Where are they getting this product from?

Got this email too.

Honestly, I expected some kind of explanation or reasoning why this is so off schedule.

I was all set to checkout when they shut it down. I'm so disappointed in them and the way they handled this mess. I haven't decided if I'm going to attempt again on Feb 3 or run another race that's more organized.

LLA - you make me laugh! your humor is great.
I'm setting my alarm for the 3rd. I guess we will see how that goes.

Anonymous said...

Interesting. For most races you don't expect to be inundated on the first day. I guess LLL SW this is the way it is now in a very short time, just the 3rd year. I don't think they want this, I think they're just not prepared (even though they should be). As an example, I remember SeaWheeze store year one, stuff selling out so quickly on day one and so many people lined up early. Staff just kept saying: we were not prepared for this at all (not enough stock and so many people).

@ 1:12 and LLA 1:34, I got the e-mail notice too (and the advance notices to register) because I am specifically signed up for SeaWheeze alerts. The sender is "Sea Wheeze half marathon." I have also run it.

OT but does anyone have the fleecy keen jacket in a size 4 still available in stores near them? I'm regretting not getting one. Could anyone angel one to me?

Anonymous said...

it isn't their it. it's 2m. google them, call them, all the people registering caused a huge meltdown of their servers.

This is the first time I wanted to register and frankly I'm disappointed with the process. I've run other races where they have several distances (5K, 10K, half marathon) or run the event over 2 days. If it's THIS popular, maybe the event warrants a 2 day, 2 race deal. Just a suggestion Lulu - but I know how well you listen...

In response to previous questions- just returned grey/white stripes WU as they were shiny, synthetic, and very very sheer. Even more sheer than brisk bloom WU that I kept.

Tried CoLab returned tights in my usual size. Totally agree with another comment- yes they need to be sized down, and hopefully long legs or else the zipper is useless. Not flattering at all.

Got the bandit flowery jacket on sale for $99. Edmonton, Kingsway store it is. Very nice educators, always a pleasure to shop or to return.

Ying jacket - all the colors are blah.

Lavender CRB is thick and cottony feel- too pale for me, but otherwise- great quality.

Lululemon was able to handle the load, that was not the problem, the problem was that lulu re-directed all the traffic to a company called 2M (http://www.2mevents.com/) to handle the registration process and they were not able to handle the load.

6:03 PM, it's actually hard and complex to hold a race in a major city, or pretty much any race for that matter. It's also easier said than done to hold events over 2 days.

OT - Has anyone washed their Post Practice Cardi yet? I would love to hear how it held up after washing (hand washing or delicate/hand wash cycle on the washer). Just got mine yesterday and torn about keeping it. I did size down, but read a review on the LLL website about someone who cold-water hand washed (and lay flat to dry) and found that the Cardi still shrank in length and is no longer bum-covering...

I would guess some of the WMTM product is shipped back from stores—once it gets marked down and sits on the sales floor for too long and is not selling to that store's local customers, it gets shipped back to a warehouse and inventoried into the online system to try to sell to a wider audience. The stores only have so much display space so if something's not selling, they have to get get it out of there eventually. Putting it up for online sale makes sense.

@ anon 9:!0 am- Interesting. I believe they used Event Brite for the previous two races. At least that is who I remember getting previous notifications from.

It has been like that since I started buying lulu 2 years ago.

coverage review of the new wee stripe black heathered black wunder under crops...

Love them, yes they are lighter weight/thinner than the regular luon. No problem for me, I actually like that. I have different weights to choose from in my WU's.

The material a bit shinier than usual - but not so much it would EVER bother me.

I don't bend over in them, so I haven't found them to be sheer, but I'm sure if you compare to regular black WU, they would seem less opaque. Bottom line, another non-issue for me.

@1254

Oh I bet they are going to move to a new company that can actually handle the volume. I've signed up for many popular races that have sold out with no issues. This is crazy!

Anonymous said...

They are going to use the same company (2M) but will manage the load by using another company called akami (http://www.akamai.com/), if the site experiences more traffic that what it can handle you will be put on hold until the server can handle your request and you will get a "Try again in x minutes" page or something like that.

It is a big, involved deal to put on a road race. You need a very strong race committee to successfully pull that off! My running club puts one event on a year, The Mt. Si Relay and Ultra Runs. We have an 5 person 59 mile relay (everyone runs two kegs), and 50k and 50 mile ultramarathons. It use to be a road relay (back when it was named Falls to Gasworks), but we found it was actually easier to do most of the race on trails. Regardless of that, there is all kinds of permitting that needs to take place, anything on a road is going to necessitate traffic control and road closures for big races. This can utilize local police resources as well as a lot of volunteers. We also have to talk to some of the residents and locals who are going to be impacted by the inconvenience of a major race going through their neighborhoods.

Doing an event over two days is not only more costly but also inconveniences the locals for two days in a row--it's going to be hard to get community buy-in. As someone else suggested, multiple distances like a half and a 5k or 10k could be something that would be more workable than a two day event. The only thing with adding more people (even in multiple distances) is then you have to have more of everything: more porta-potties, more volunteers, more post-race food, more water, etc.

Some races struggle to get enough runners to break even. Lulu is in an enviable spot to have a race that's growing so much in popularity. Sometimes there are growing pains with that, especially if the trajectory outpaces what was originally envisioned. I hope all of you who want to do this race can get in!

I tried on the black wee wuc and they were so sheer. I only would purchase them for lounging if knew that I would be wearing a long top or sweater to cover my butt all the time... That would never happen - pass.

@ anon 5:22 am - Disney has definitely experienced some growing pains with its races. They added a 10K the day before their half last year when they started the Dumbo Double Dare but didn't add another day of the expo and it created a couple hours long line for people picking up their packets on the first day. There was also an issue getting people into the corrals for the DL Half last year and a lot of the back of the field was so late heading to their corrals they got to jump in the middle of the pack.

LLA@11:17, they are adding a 5k on Thursday now for next year so people can do "Dopey's Challenge". People who do all 4 races will get 6 medals! Crazy, huh? A bunch of my friend's want to do it, but my body wouldn't even be able to handle The Goofy's Challenge!

Thanks for all you do here. With your honesty, condo and wonderful sense of humor, you provide a service almost akin to therapy for some if us! God bless you! :)

Oops "candor" not condo!!

Akamai is just a distributed web traffic balancer that will prevent traffic from hitting this shoddy 2m event site all at once. The 2m site will STILL need to processes each transaction after Akamai lets a connection through.

Sounds like these new ticketers have no idea what their doing if they are just NOW introducing the concept of load balancing for an onsale.

Lulu used to host Sea Wheeze using Eventbrite, which I've had no problem with in the past. Looks like they should have stuck with the ticketing company that could keep up with their growth.

LuluAddict said...

@ Sara - I agree. The 2M site looks very rinky dink. They probably dropped Event Brite to save some money. They should have just raised the entry fee a few bucks.
