NEW! Board Shorts. Also, Light Up Tanks Are Back

Reader Rose of Cali Lulu Buyers sent me some photos of the new Paradise Long and Short Short that is hitting the stores. You can wear them in the water.

Can't say I think these are too attractive. They look like men's boxers and I hate the eyelet trim.

These shorts are a little better but I still hate the eyelet trim and cheap-looking zig zag stitching.  I've got to say I like my board shorts a little more traditional looking with a hibiscus print and a lace up fly.

Custom Made Board Shorts by Xelosette
I've actually had some board shorts custom made for me to match my swimsuits by Boardshort World/Xelosette, a company located here in Orange County that makes the shorts on site. Every now then a pair pops up on ebay so I have a few pairs of them. They also make board skirts and, I see now, maternity shorts. They have lasted like iron.

Board shorts by Roxy
Board shorts by Volcom
Orange County residents are also very loyal to their local surf wear manufacturers so I don't see Lululemon board shorts catching on here in a big way. Here are a couple of board shorts made by Roxy and Volcom. Both have some cute boy brief and hot pant style board shorts.

Board Shorts by Athleta
Athleta also makes some highly regarded functional swim wear. I've looked into their board shorts but ended up going with Xelosette.

A reader posted photos of new Light Up tanks to hit her local store. These have been running tight in the chest and are overpriced (historically $68) in my opinion, so unless those two things have changed, they will remain a pass for me. It's a bummer because I like luxtreme tanks a lot.

holy cow, those boardshorts are the ugliest, cheapest looking things I've EVER seen from Lululemon.

They look like something you'd buy for $10 at Old Navy (and that is NOT a compliment)

It seems lulu are going down in their design, either they bring back old style items with little change on it or they came out with that ugly dress and now the boardshort. Both of these items are so unflattering for any figures...What going on???Sorry i have to say that as I do love lulu...:)"Please these items dont upload them next week so more rooms for better items..

the dress I am talking about is "Loob de Lulu dress"..Youp! a real floug!!!

I really really don't like those board shorts...

the eyelet trim doesn't go with the "tomboyishness" of boadshorts.

The eyelet trim would make the hips look larger.

The Light Up tank I would watch the top shoulder seam, some are fraying already.

Saw the Paradise short/long shorts yesterday. It wasn't that bad...but I still prefer the Athleta ones, for the long and short versions. The Loop the Lulu was there but was not enticed at all to try it. (It's pretty bad when I don't want to try on an item at Lulu.) Did spent quite a bit, though. Got the Dhanurasana crop in Black/Pink Mist Space Dye, finally managed to snag the Scoop Neck in Pink Mist/Pink Mist Space Dye and also got the Power Y in the same Pink Mist Space Dye, but it's just all one color. Love it! Looks great with the crops. Also got the Deep Breath and Pranayama tanks in Surge. Love that color. Was hoping the ones in Pink Mist(Deep Breath) has the Space Dye trim around the chest opening, but it's just a solid Pink Mist. And lastly...(been going like a little pig!), I can't resist the Heathered Wren Backbend crops. True to all the reviews, don't try it on...'coz you will buy it. Resistance is futile! Sorry LuluAddict, checked on the Heathered Wren Still Crops and the Wren Still shorts, still (no pun intended) can't find them. Why don't you try or try again, the Heathered Wren Backbend?

Not a fan of these board shorts at all -- do not like the tie dye look or the eyelet --- they just look sloppy and loose to me -- I wonder how well they would even stay up in the water with the elastic waist --I showed my surfer daughter and she burst out laughing -- totally non-functional for surfing -- she will stick with roxy and volcom -- although I will check out the one you mentioned!

oh yeah, the website is so much better now that lulu has brought in it house...NOT. reviews for a tank (i think full eagle) are under the split short reviews...

Wow. Not liking them. :( For beach stuff, I trust with Roxy more.
Since online store's been looking really sucky, I went to my local lulu. The store has more varieties, which is not good for those who have no access to an actual store.
I got CRBs in Wren and Surge. Both really pretty!
I hope lulu sticks with their best selling designs and add more colors instead of trying to come up with new ugly nonfunctional items.

For me my lulu spending goes down in the summer. I've found their summer designs are rarely as nice as the fall/winter stuff, too much of which I love.

I'm very disappointed that many items haven't been uploaded to the online store. Pink mist energy bra and pullover, as well as the new CRBS and power dance tanks. I'm not close to a store.. Starting to get somewhat peeved that lulu doesn't offer an equal supply across the board. My purchasing is definitely decreasing.

@RunMama - I am the exact same. I buy tons of Lulu in fall/winter and much much less in spring/summer. Part of it's the designs, but I think for me it's also partly the color palettes - I'm not a fan of all the pastels that generally come out in spring, but I love the richer colors Lulu usually brings out in the fall.

@chiRunner and RunMama- I wear most colors, more of a design and fabric person. Love the light weight summer fabrics. Please do check out the color Surge. Very pretty color. Bought the Pranayama tank and Scoop Neck in this color yesterday. My husband thought it's a very pretty color too. And I think this color is good on a wide range of skin tone. :)

Hmm -- i love the summer outfits -- I wish they would come out with some "have to have" outfits like last years -plus you can get an outfit for under 100 bucks!! hehe!!

@momof5-Oh how I wish that's a reality...I will be first in line to snag it! ;)

Everyone posting on this forum should be putting their feedback on the website or emailing the guest education center. If you don't like something fix it, don't complain about it. I personally quite like everything lulu has to offer right now minus a few pieces but hey, they can't please everyone ALL the time. We all have different tastes.
As for the shorts, yes they aren't amazing, but let's face it lululemon isn't a surf company like Roxy. This is why they only bring out around one style a year. They do it in an attempt to please those guests that really want them and then the rest of the time stick to what they are good at.
The Loop De Lulu dress on the other hand I think is quite gorgeous you just have to have the right figure to wear it. I hate to come off harsh here but just because you can't fit properly into something doesn't mean you should go off and start bad mouthing it. I understand that when you went to try it on and your breasts could hardly fit into it your confidence got a little squashed but that doesn't mean you need to go bad mouthing a product all over the internet. We all understand how lulu can fit you don't need to worry. Just remember it's designed with the size 6 athlete in mind.
In conclusion, give them feedback so the change you want to see happens and make your own decisions on how you feel about the product.

@ anon 6:16 am - I did love the Backbend crops and was very tempted by them. Drat you, maybe I will get a pair after all. ;-) The Heathered Wren were nice, too, but I am kind of worried about perspiration showing in the lighter color. I almost wore my coal Zoom shorts to spin the other but the thought of visible sweat marks made me choose my regular black bottoms.

I am trying to think whether or not my lulu spending goes down in the summer. I know I am waiting for the warmer weather so I can start wearing my CRBs around more. CRBs, for me, are more streetwear than gym wear. If they came out with some luxtreme, silverscent, or circle mesh tanks I could use it probably wouldn't but so far the new lightweight tops seem to be coming in late. They also seem to be making a ton of new crops rather than tanks lately. I very rarely buy a new pair of bottoms because the designs don't really change that radically. So what if they added a new bow or circle mesh panel at the bottom of what, for all purposes, looks like a pair of Wunder Unders? Big whoop. That being said, I do like the new shorter length of the Backbend and Dhanasura crops and can definitely see a "need" for them in the summer.

RunMama said...

@momof5 - how are you getting an outfit for under $100 in the summer?? do tell :-) Part of my problem with the summer designs are that I find the prices just too high. My best buys are definitely from the markdown rack around August.

I actually don't agree that lulu designs with a size 6 athlete in mind. Unless anon has some insider info I think the beauty of lulu is that it flatters so many figures. I see it on all sizes and shapes at the gym and on the streets. I think it's perfectly fine to comment on whether or not we like something on a blog dedicated to lululemon. And I think the GEC reads everything here, no need to send an email!

Hi Luluaddict!

sorry if this ? is not appropriate on a lulu blog, but you made me do it! Absolutely LOVE the board shorts you posted from Xelosette. Any sizing info you could post would be really helpful, especially if you have purchased for your husband or kids i ( have 2 boys). would love to get everyone in the family a pair (not matching though, we're not the Griswalds)!!
THX SO MUCH

@ anon 9:43 am - I thought the Xelosette ran a bit small. I seem to remember reading on their site, after I bought my shorts of course, that they recommeding getting the next size up in their stuff. This was for the women's stuff only.

@ anon 3:32 pm [or should I say anonymous lululemon employee?] - How can "we" change the designs? I think people do need to give lululemon feedback and a lot of people email it in into the company. I think Lululemon is very responsive - we've been asking for designs for larger busts and colors like greens and reds and we've gotten them this year so they definitely listen.

On this blog people can feel free to say anything they want about the designs. This is a fan site about lululemon clothes but that doesn't mean we have to blindly love everything. If people don't like a certain item and state it here, it's not exactly "bad mouthing it all over the internet".

I don't really think people have problems with the fit of the Loop de Lulu dress other than it runs snug in the bust - and the girl who sent in the photo wasn't what I'd call overly busty - is that is a very plain dress for the money. I think lululemon makes fabulous technical clothes that fit a variety of sizes very well but most of their casual wear is not nearly as good. It's often on the plain side with odd details. Look at the Paradise board shorts. Why add the eyelet trim? If they left it off they are much cuter. The eyelet trim is a discordant note in the design.

Completely agree and thank you LuluAddict for your comments and for the blog. Of course Lulu reads this blog and it's because we're honest with our opinions. I'm a retailer and if I didn't listen to my customers (good AND bad) I would not be successful. I love all feedback as long as it's being offered in a straightforward, not to say rude, way. Saying you don't like something is not rude, it's honest. I would never make a comment about how a PERSON looks on this blog, but I feel perfectly free to comment on the clothing...that's why I come here! Keep up the great work, LuluAddict, and ditto to all the regular contributors. And BTW, I'm a 6, in decent shape, and there are lots of things that don't suit me.

Anonymous said...

Well said LuluAddict, what makes a great blog such as this one is both the positive and negative feedback.

I feel Lululemon has had a lot of misses lately, lack of color a nice balance between neutral and color would be nice, and better quality on some items, and where are the basic Define and InStride jackets and tees for summer, the customers are looking for them?

Anonymous said...

Forgot in earlier post to give a shout out to my coal microstripe InStride. Seriously sick jacket, I absolutely love it and think it's the best possible colour and fabric for this style.

I wrote the previous anonymous comment and just want to clarify a few things because it's obviously stirred the pot a little.
First off in no way was I making a stab at the girl in the picture. I quite liked the way the dress fit her, especially with the straps tied around her neck. I was just making a general point that those styles seem to fit tight through the bust. I have a very small chest and personally found I had to go up a size because the girls were just way to squished. I am sorry if I bothered anyone with that comment as that was not my intent. As for the clothing being designed with the size six athlete in mind I am going off their mannequins, staff, and models from the internet. That being said I do believe most their clothing flatters people of all shapes and sizes and that they don't only want smaller sizes wearing their stuff.
As for putting your opinions on this blog, again almost everyone misunderstood me. I am not saying don't state your thoughts here I am just saying that also share them with lululemon themselves. Yes I am sure the GEC looks at this stuff, but if you really want something changed wouldn't you try to reach them in as many ways possible? I am sure the majority of the people posting on here are just looking for someplace to complain and would never actually attempt to change it themselves. As luluaddict said above if enough people ask for something they do it. The reason why I wrote the above was because I couldn't stand all the rude, negative things people were saying. My point wasn't to upset people it was to make people think and possibly go share their thoughts in a kinder, more constructive way. Feedback, positive and negative is very important but remember when giving it that the tone reflects how it will be received.
Lastly, I am not a lululemon employee but have been a major fan for 10 year and wanted to stick up for something I love. I quite like this blog, and it was FAR from my intention to sound negative towards it. I am up in Canada and even though lululemon started in Vancouver you seem to have pictures of products before my local store does which always feels exciting and shows me what to look out for. SO LuluAddict: Thank you and to those sending in pictures for sharing. To Everyone else: Some of your thoughts and opinions are really good and worth a look at, but if you could be a little more polite and send it to influential people so it actually gets heard I think many people would benefit.

They're ugly board shorts for sure, but they're still way cuter than the ones they made for the guys... that all ended up on the discount racks because they were so ugly ;)

We still need to bring the Down Dawn shorts back for the guys!!

What type of pants is the model wearing that has on the eagle tank? Are they the studio pants?
